Winter Edition: Winterize your Plants

Plants need insulation, moisture management, and physical protection using breathable covers, adding mulch, and brushing off heavy snow are the most effective immediate steps to prevent freeze damage and breakage.

  1. Cover Vulnerable Plants (Most Important) -
  2. Use breathable materials: blankets, sheets, frost cloths.
Avoid plastic, which traps moisture and freezes plant tissue. Secure covers to the ground to trap warmth.

      2. Add Mulch for Root Insulation

Spread 2–4 inches of straw, shredded leaves, or wood chips around perennials and shrubs.

Mulch acts like a “blanket,” stabilizing soil temperature and protecting roots.

      3. Water Thoroughly Before the Freeze

  • Moist soil holds heat better than dry soil.
  • Watering a day before the freeze helps plants tolerate cold stress.
  • 4. Use Temporary Structures for Extra Protection.
  • Hoop tunnels, cages, or even upside-down buckets over small plants add insulation.
  • Uncover plants during warmer daytime hours to prevent overheating.

Hotbed

A cold frame (a low, box‑like structure with a transparent lid).

Placed over a layer of actively decomposing manure + straw,

which produces natural heat as it breaks down.

This keeps the soil warm even in freezing, snowy conditions.
